A Historical Look
It is said that a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step. In June 2004, a small group of us, under the inspirational leadership of Imam W. Deen. Mohammed – son of the Hon. Elijah Mohammed – came together to practice our faith, as ordered by Allah and His Messenger (the prayers and peace be on him) and to make a difference in the world, starting with our own immediate community.   Our first step, Which began our thousand-mile journey, started at 1628 Good Hope Road, S.E, Washington, DC. Each of us, to a person, had ties to this Southeast community in particular – through family, business, or social experience – and each of us had the desire in our hearts and minds, both individually and collectively, to change the condition of a community far removed from the rest of the world. Our goal is simple; to leave this earth and its inhabitants in a better condition than we found it.   Our mission is clear and unwavering – to promote our Islamic Faith and its principles of freedom, justice and equality to a people suffering from a corrupt system that demonstrates to them every day how little concern or regard they have for them and their condition. Their condition is our condition.   If they hurt, we hurt; the difference being, by Allah’s Grace and Mercy, we’ve been guided to a natural way, a balanced way of life in order to correct our own personal conditions – and ultimately our hearts – and now it has been decreed by Almighty Allah Himself, that we provide help to those with the greatest need.   We now know what we need to do, how we need to do it and whom we need to do it for. Our vision is to establish a center as the catalyst in building-up the trust of our community.   That trust, built on character, honesty, decency, clean living, forthrightness and an unwavering truth, will allow us to then build schools, businesses, job training centers, housing, health clinics, wellness centers and other community-building institutions in an effort to enrich the lives of our human family. Today, we’ve laid the foundation – you’ve laid the foundation with us – by your support, prayers, donations or simply words of encouragement; we all have a stake in this.   We’re determined, with Allah’s help, to build on that foundation, in order to establish a legacy for our children and our children’s children.   We want to remake the world, one person, one family, one community at a time; to honor the legacy of our leader, Imam W. Deen Mohammed, who taught us that to do so, was not only part of our personal responsibility, but part of our duty and faith; his father, the Hon. Elijah Mohammed, who taught us to do for self and kind; and those pioneers, some still among us, who have followed them both, like us, for nearly 80 years. Never let it be said that we at NAICC-DC didn’t take the verses of the Qur’an to heart, and did our best to put both its principles and basic teachings into practice.   Is there any doubt that now – in this period of panic – is the time for firmness and patience, in these times of suffering and adversity?   And who better to lead them from the depths of darkness and despair than those of us who lay claim to being the sons and daughters of a formerly enslaved people; the people of truth, the Allah-fearing – Muslim and non-Muslim – those of us with a new mind, desirous of building a new community, towards a new vision we call New Africa, chosen by Almighty Allah Himself to specifically serve those He called out by name or circumstance? We formally invite you to JOIN US – come with us on this journey of a thousand miles of wonderment and fulfillment; HELP US to realize the vision of a new people, a NEW AFRICA.   Become a part of something bigger than yourself.   Now is the time to join with us, the NEW AFRICA ISLAMIC COMMUNITY CENTER of  WASHINGTON, DC.
